I am forever grateful to God for the ministry of Willow Creek and the gift that Bill Hybels has been not only to me but to the Body of Christ.  Unbeknownst  to Bill he has been a mentor to me for the past 20 odd years through his books, his leadership and his obedience to the Spirit’s prompting to extend all that Willow is to the global church.

One of the blessings of being a member of the WCA is the monthly CD and DVD pack. These could be leadership insights with Bill and guests or sermon series. Each new set go straight into my car and get played over and over. Jesus said we learn line upon line, precept upon precept and so no matter the distance I’m driving I can have the privilege of being fed by His Word.

These resources are tips on leadership, practical church admin or management issues that confront us all. What a privilege to be able to glean wisdom from leaders such as Bill and guests. 

Over the years the WCA has brought many great leaders to South Africa to help equip the local church. To name just a few that we have benefitted enormously from, were the Building Prevailing Church conference with Bill, Promiseland conferences, Building Small Groups and then dear Dr B’s visit which challenged some ideas.

It is hard to express in words the blessing and influence that the WCA has had in our lives as well as the life of our church congregation. 

We were rather skeptical as to whether the GLS would work in South Africa. Other ministries had tried gathering leaders together to watch a DVD format seminar but without success. However true to the Willow ethic the GLS was presented with such excellence that it has been an unparalleled success.

Many times we, in Africa, feel sorry for ourselves because we cannot afford to host international respected Christian leaders in our churches. Well the good news is you can! Through attending the GLS.  Each year the lineup of speakers consists of the highest calibre of Leaders in the Church, Business and Social Sectors. Our staff, pastors and elders have been enormously impacted by attending the GLS each year.

I know that our business leaders use the GLS material in their companies, coaching their staff and in dealing with clients, as well as in the sporting arena. We have been encouraged and motivated in our pursuit of various social outreach activities particularly in the area of social injustice. People such as Gary Haugen and Pravitha Timothy of IJM, Wes Stafford of Compassion and Mamma Maggie, Joseph Grenny, Richard Stearn of World Vision.

I could go on and on about the benefits that the WCA and what The Global Leadership Summit has brought me and our church but time does not allow that. However the demonstration or proof that we absolutely believe in the ministry of Willow we count it a privilege to work with them by being one of the GLS host churches, as well as hosting any events that we can for the WCA.

The best gift any leader could give themselves and their coworkers is to be a member of the WCA and then engage and participate in all that it offers.

15 Perks Leaders Receive

Very rarely do people discuss the price that leaders must pay.

  • Sleepless Nights.
  • Loneliness.
  • Fear.
  • Uncertainty.
  • Things Which Break Your Heart.
  • Disappointment.
  • Criticism.
  • Missed Expectations.
  • Hard Decisions.
  • Long Hours.
  • Preparation.
  • Etc…

These create a high price few are willing to pay.  And of those who choose to pay the high price of leadership, fewer still finish the race well.  Everyone loves the perks of leadership but its price is quite expensive.

Tonight I am reflecting about all the things I love about leadership.  I am thinking about the things that make the leadership price worth paying.  The perks.  And if you would permit me, I would like to outwardly process what those perks to leadership are.

My hope is that my list will inspire you to make your own.  The following are 15 Perks Leaders Receive:

  • Being part of big vision.
  • Having the need to constantly learn.  I love reading.
  • Going on a journey with people you care about.
  • Having a sense of accomplishment.
  • I love it that my life counts and I haven’t been called to a lesser dream.
  • The way people treat the children of leaders, especially my daughter.
  • Serving other leaders.
  • Providing solutions to those in desperate need.
  • Giving people hope and a chance.
  • The creative process.
  • The opportunity to interact and making memories with other leaders.
  • Building a sustainable future.
  • Showing others grace and helping them improve when mistakes are made.

But the two biggest perks I receive as a leader are:

  • Quiet dinners with my wife.
  • And long walks with absolutely no agenda talking to my daughter.

I had both tonight.  That dinner and walk reminded me leadership’s greatest perk.  Tonight reminded me that being a leader allows me the opportunity to give my family a better life.

Only 1/10 pastors make it through ministry!

  •  95% of pastors do not pray regularly with their wives
  •  70% of pastors feel grossly under paid
  •  85% of pastors said their greatest problem is dealing with problem people
    • Disgruntled elders, elders, worship leaders & teams, board members, & associate pastors
    •  This tragedy lies upon the doorstep of Boards/ Elders/ Deacons/ Society Stewards :
      • Only 1 out of 10 individuals, who start in ministry, will finish their careers in ministry! Why?
      • 50% of pastors will get divorced
      • 70% of pastors say they do not have a close friend!
      • 80% of pastors and 84% of their spouses live in a relentless state of discouragement
      • 33% of pastors say that being in ministry is a hazard to their family
      • 40% report having a serious conflict with someone in their church at least once per month!
      • 40% report considering leaving their pastorates in the last 3 months!
      • 70% of pastors fight depression continuously!
      • 40% of pastors have had an affair while in ministry!
      • 80% of pastors’ kids suffer from depression.
      • 50% of pastors are so discouraged that they would leave the ministry if they could, but have no other way of making a living!
      • 80% of seminary and Bible school graduates who enter the ministry will leave within the first 5 years
      • 70% of pastors said that the only time they spent studying the Bible was when they are preparing their sermons.
      • 50% of pastors say that the most destructive thing that occurred in their marriages – the day they entered ministry!

  All this is happening on our watch!!! This is not God honoring, or what God intended!

  • Pastors perform the most important work on planet earth!
  • What are WE going to do to change these horrific stats, and protect them and their families? 
  • Care of the pastor and his/her family, is the most important portfolio in your church!
    • “Without a shepherd the flock is soon scattered!”

I am planning to create a resource for every church with some insight and information about how they can walk alongside the pastor so these statistics are dramatically turned around.

Seth Godin loves to share the story of how years ago Richard Branson, founder of Virgin Air, found himself in an airport in the Caribbean. They had just cancelled his flight. Instead of freaking out about his day being ruined, he walked to the charter desk and asked about the cost of chartering a flight. He borrowed a chalkboard and wrote, “Seats to Virgin Islands, $39.”
In a few minutes, Branson had sold enough seats to cover his costs and he made it home in time. The experience also planted the seeds for the airline he would later start.
Branson wasn’t afraid of change. Anyone else would have called a cab and booked a hotel room. Anyone else would have tried again tomorrow. We need more church leaders who are willing to embrace change when the status quo is no longer good enough. Here are 10 truths about change:
1. Slow change is rarely positive change.
2. If everyone already recognizes the need for change, you’re obviously not the leader.
3. When it comes to change, leaders go first.
4. Organizations that don’t change die.
5. If a change seems easy, you’re probably not changing enough.
6. When you think you’ve communicated enough about a change, communicate more.
7. It’s very difficult to change a change that previously worked.
8. Someone will despise the change and let you know about it.
9. Change, even the best kind, will generate some fear, anger and sadness.
10. Change without metrics is foolish.
According to Seth, we can choose whether or not to live in a decade of frustration or a decade of change.
